In 1980, Ted Kennedy ran, unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for President. He won 37% of the vote but lost the nomination to Jimmy Carter who went on to be the 39th President of the United States.  June 3 marked the final day of primary contests with 8 states holding elections.
